Introducing Samantha Gash

Samantha Gash is a wild human being. She was the first woman in the world to complete the 4 Deserts Grand Slam ultra-marathons in a single year. She’s run 3,500km from the west to the east coast of India, traversed Nepal’s Great Himalaya Trail, and ran 379km nonstop across Australia’s Simpson Desert. She’s been a corporate lawyer, performed circus arts for Indigenous kids in the heart of Australia, and worked for a non-profit providing free legal defence for American prisoners on death row. She’s been a contestant on Survivor. She’s a devoted mother, bringing her 6-year-old son, Harry, along on her adventures - from the rugged trails of Nepal to remote parts of Australia. She’s also just happened to have raised over $1.5 million for charity through collaborative initiatives.

And all of this, from a short, “uncool” kid who was always picked last for sports at school.

Above everything, Sam is a kind, compassionate human being and a fierce advocate for gender equality and inclusion. Rather than standing on the pedestal of her accomplishments, she is committed to empowering others to tap into their own bravery, inspiring them to go beyond what they thought they were capable of. As a trailblazer in endurance sports and leadership, she’s breaking barriers for women and amplifying diverse voices - not only in outdoor adventure but in spaces where people have often felt they didn’t belong.

Through her personal brand, Sam serves as a goodwill ambassador for World Vision and partners with brands like Arc'teryx, AIA Vitality, Specialized, Rokeby, and Jeep to promote resilience, community, and outdoor adventure.

She also channels her energy into Her Trails as the founder and CEO, where she guides women across the globe on paths of discovery and resilience - whether through holistic trail running online programs that reach women worldwide, inclusive group runs in over 20 locations across Australia and New Zealand, or immersive adventure retreats in remote environments.

We caught up with Sam recently at one such retreat in the heart of Australia -  to speak about what drives her, what keeps her going when things get tough, and the qualities it takes to overcome adversity.

--- BREAK IT DOWN FOR ME...
1) What specific challenges did Samantha face during her major endurance adventures, like the 4 Deserts Grand Slam or running across India, and how did she overcome them?
Samantha Gash faced numerous challenges during her major endurance adventures, each testing her resilience and determination in unique ways. For example, during the 4 Deserts Grand Slam, she had to endure extreme weather conditions ranging from searing heat to freezing cold, as well as physical exhaustion and mental fatigue from covering vast distances on rugged terrain. In her run across India, she navigated the challenges of cultural barriers, chaotic traffic, and the immense physical toll of running over 3,500 kilometers. Samantha credits her success in overcoming these obstacles to her ability to break the overwhelming challenges into manageable goals, staying deeply connected to her purpose, and drawing on her support system for motivation and encouragement.
2) How does Her Trails specifically help women build resilience and confidence? What activities, lessons, or programs are offered in these retreats and online courses?
Her Trails is designed to empower women by fostering resilience and confidence through a variety of carefully crafted experiences. The online programs provide holistic guidance on trail running, combining physical training with mental preparation and self-discovery. The inclusive group runs create a sense of community and belonging, offering women a safe space to connect and grow. The immersive adventure retreats, hosted in remote and stunning locations, challenge participants to step outside their comfort zones, teaching them to embrace adversity, find inner strength, and build camaraderie with like-minded women. Samantha emphasizes the importance of these programs in helping women redefine what they’re capable of and find empowerment through nature and movement.
3) What drives Samantha to balance such a dynamic lifestyle — including extreme adventures, motherhood, and advocacy — and how does she manage her time?
Balancing a dynamic lifestyle as an endurance athlete, mother, and advocate is no easy feat, and Samantha manages it through a mix of intention, structure, and adaptability. She is deeply driven by her purpose—to inspire and empower others—and this mission fuels her to keep going even when life gets hectic. Samantha prioritizes her roles carefully, ensuring that her son Harry is integrated into her adventures whenever possible, allowing her to share her passion for exploration and resilience with him. She also credits a disciplined schedule and a supportive network of friends, family, and collaborators for helping her manage the demands of her multifaceted life while staying true to her values.
