Hooked on the Wild: Gido’s Coastal Missions with OTIS

Gideon “Gido” Mettam doesn’t just go fishing. He captures adventure with both hands and a baited-line. Hanging from sheer cliff faces above churning Indian Ocean swells and camping on remote islands with nobody else in sight, Gido is like angling’s Bear Grylls. Armed with little more than a rod, a harness, and a serious appetite for the untamed,  Gido has carved out a following that stretches well beyond Australia’s shores. His YouTube channel, Gido’s Fishing Adventures, has reeled in hundreds of thousands of subscribers with raw footage of him dropping into isolated rock ledges and hauling in fish from places most of us would hesitate to hike, let alone cast a line from.

It’s not just the fishing that hooks people, it’s the full story. The early starts. The long drives. The bush-bashing and rope work. The silent patience followed by the sudden chaos of landing a fish where few ever have.

“I’ve been out here all day long,” he says in a recent clip we filmed together around our shared home in South West WA. “Sun’s beating down, and I’ve been up and down cliff faces scrambling through bush as well to get to the locations I want to fish.”

It’s a physical, often punishing pursuit, and the kind of environment where gear either performs or gets left behind. Among the essentials that make it back time after time are his OTIS frames.

“(They) cut through the glare so I can sight-cast fish or see structure below and protect my eyes from the harsh Australian sun all at the same time,” he says. “Couldn’t go anywhere without them really.”

Gido’s adventures aren’t polished or preened. They’re gritty, grounded, and built on a love for the wild that’s impossible to fake. Through every near miss, every sketchy descent and unexpected catch, he brings a raw authenticity that mirrors what we believe at OTIS — that real freedom lives off the beaten track, in those moments you earn.
